Hluhluwe iMfolozi ParkThe Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is one of the best game reserves in South Africa, a place which you have to see if you are going to be traveling in KwaZulu-Natal in north eastern South Africa. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is one of the best safari destinations in southern Africa because the rich vegetation and good summer rainfall means that the area can support high populations of herbivores and predators. The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park has the highest concentration of White rhinoceros in Africa, as well as healthy populations of other rare animals such as Wild dog and Black rhinoceros. At Hluhluwe-iMfolozi you will also see large numbers of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, impala, kudu and much more. Three rivers flow through the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, the White Umfolozi, Black Umfolozi and the Hluhluwe rivers. These permanent sources of water also enable the Hlulhuwe-iMfolozi Park to support large numbers and concentrations of animals. Even when the river appear dry, the water continues to flow below the surface, and animals dig water holes in the sandy beds of the White and the Black Umfolozi rivers. Some of the best safari routes are along these rivers Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is home to all of the African Big 5 animals, namely elephants, lions, black rhino, buffalo and leopard. If you do a 2 or 3 day safari in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, you will see at least 4 of the Big 5. Leopard are elusive, but you have a good chance of spotting one on a night drive in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. The animals in Hluhluwe have become accustomed to vehicles and sightings of animals next to the road are very common. This makes for good game viewing and excellent photographic safaris at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. The scenery at the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is beautiful, with rolling hills, valleys, forests and vast savannah. The hilly terrain allows for good game viewing and safaris because one gets many views over the landscape, enabling you to view animals in the distance. The main camps, Hilltop Camp and Mpila Camp, are situated high on top of high hills, offering stunning views over Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Safaris can be done from these camps, or if you have accommodation outside of the park, there are several safari operators who do day safaris and multiple day safaris into the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. You can join an organized safari to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi or do a private safari. Walking safaris depart from all of the camps and bush lodges in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Safaris are also organized from the town of St Lucia. St Lucia in itself is a place that you have to see while in Zululand KZN, and it is also the perfect base from which to explore Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park (Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park), Maputaland and southern Mozambique.
